You have two options to setup your portal access, either directly from the Helderberg College Computer Lab, or from another location on your own computer or device.

Setup From The Computer Lab:

Step 1. [Skip Step 1 if you have already logged in at the computer lab] Login to any computer with the username and first-time temporary password supplied by the IT Department.

Step 2. [Skip Step 2 if you have already logged in at the computer lab] You will be requested to change your password. Your new password needs to have at least 7 characters in it, and you cannot use the old one. Try not to use a password that you use on other portals, like Facebook, or your personal email accounts. Please use a unique password.
The new password now gives you access to your HBC Gmail account, internet access on your personal computer on the campus Wifi, the Computer lab, and Moodle.

Step 3. Now go to http://gmail.com and login to your HBC email account. Your username is your HBC email address provided by the IT Department. You must use your FULL EMAIL ADDRESS to login to your gmail email account. Your password is the new password you changed in in step 2 above. Login to your account and make sure you have access to it.

PRINTING & PHOTO COPIES: You receive R72.50 printing & copier credit for printing in the computer lab per semester. When this is finished you must purchase more at the Finance Department. Bring your receipt to the IT Department. The photo copy machines are in the IT Department and Library. Touch your card on the activator with the red LED to login to the copier. If it does not work, it is likely you need your student card activated first at the IT Department.

INTERNET: Currently you receive 12 GB per week of internet bandwidth for personal and work use on your personal computer, laptop or mobile device. Login to the Helderberg Hotspot with your username and password. Once your bandwith is finished, you can purchase a top up from the Finance Department for R50. Otherwise, just wait for the weekly bandwidth to reset at 12 am on Monday morning.

ALWAYS - Do not forget to logout of your computer in the Computer lab when finished!

Step 4. The next step, you do not have to complete immediately. You can do this later when you have 15 minutes to spare. You will also need to know your SA Identification Number, or Passport Number if you are a foreign student. Once it is added, you only need to check it once per semester to make sure it remains up to date.

In your HBC Gmail account, your inbox shoud have an email from "Student Manager". Follow the link in the email, and provide a password for the SMP page. The password can be the same as your other passwords, but for security reasons, it should be different from your other portals.
Once you change your password, this will be the password for SMP access. After you change your password, further access to SMP can be from the HBC website, www.hbc.ac.za, there is a link at the top of our site.

Once you login to SMP for the first time, you MUST complete the personal details page. After you complete it, the IT Department will need to approve it. You do not have to see us for that, as we will do it remotely, unless there is a problem with your content.
