Each year the Alumni Association confers the Alumnus of the Year Award to an alumnus of the institution, who has demonstrated, over a significant period of time, dedication to the advancement of Adventist education, combined with a strong sense of community and social responsibility.
The 2017 Alumnus of the Year Award was presented to Dr Gideon Petersen, Vice Chancellor & Rector at Université Adventiste Zurcher in Madagascar. Dr Petersen is an educator, education administrator and missiologist. He is a man with multi-cultural working experience, who understands the heartbeat of Christian education. He holds a degree in BA Theology from the HCHE campus, and BA Honours, Masters, and a PhD in Missiology from University of the Free State.
In his over 20 years of experience, he has served in many various roles, including pastoral work in Namibia, church planting, university educator, education director, and academic Vice-President. His resumé reflects the work of an impassioned, well-educated, transformational leader.

The Alumni Association honours a man who started his journey on the Helderberg College campus, and has excelled in his career and in the service of Adventist Christian education. The Association honours a man who, despite the diverse challenges in the world, works daily to develop the leaders with integrity, both in and outside the Church.
